If there is one new year practice I stand by it’s cracking open a fresh journal and planner to write the vision, document the journey, and plan for the year ahead. Over the years, my methods have changed. Some years I’ve been dedicated to a more traditional planner, some free flowing journals, and others a preference for guided journals have taken center stage. Regardless of which, you can always count on a clean slate and a clean first page at the top of a new year. Xo
I can’t write about planning and journals without mentioning Myleik. My unofficial mentor in my head, her daily planning routine changed the game for me when I bought her first journal back in 2015. This way of documenting and planning the day in the same notebook was a new concept for me. One that has truly helped me trace the journey from employee to entrepreneur and through the first few rocky years of self-employment. Start with her Learn More to Earn More journal if you can get your hands on it to learn her method and scoop up the others if you can too. I heard once they’re gone, they’re gone!
I haven’t used a traditional planner in a few years now. In my early 20’s I LIVED for them, but as life became more complex, I never found one that truly met all my needs as a mother, business owner, and creative. I’ve found myself taking a peek to see what might be out there for people like me and I discovered this 2020 Annual Dated Planner by Alter Planning Co. This is much more than your regular daily planner with pages to track your personal goals, income and expense tracking, blank space for dreaming, project breakdowns for bigger goals, habit trackers and more. It reminds me of a ready made bullet journal with tons of intention and thoughtfulness.
You’ve probably saw that quote floating around social media that says something like “2020 is very personal to me. I owe myself a lot.” I felt that. I have big dreams for this next decade and it’s feeling like 2020 is a year of creating a personal foundation on which to build. With that said, I’m taking self-care very seriously in the new year and anything serious requires a plan. I’ve had my eye on the Replenish Planner by Josefina Herrera Sanders of Love Offering Co. Her words have soothed my heart on many a day. This 180 day self-care planner is designed for the busy person (raises hand) looking to make self-care a priority. I’m also looking at Alex Elle’s Today I Affirm Journal for reading and writing affirmations. This is the first year that in lieu of resolutions and goals, I chose to write affirmations. This journal seems fitting for a year of affirmation.
After being a boy mom for 11 years, last year I gave birth to my daughter. As a woman breaking generational mothering trauma, healing from my own relationship with my mother, and working on being both a better daughter and mother to a daughter, I have my eyes, ears, and heart open to anything to assist me on this journey. I was so excited to learn a friend created Just Us Girls, a shared journal for moms and daughters. Though I have a ways to go before my daughter and I can share this, this is such a great idea for the mamas in your life raising the next generation of women.
