Let me start by unapologetically saying that I believe Black girls are the originators of beauty culture. From the nails, to the lashes, to the hair. Everything that’s popular in beauty, Black girls are behind it. So when I sat down to write about lip gloss, and specifically my grown love for it, of course I immediately connected the popular again trend to Black beauty.
Shop the Post
Black girls been wearing lip gloss forever. I mean we had a whole song about it. I remember middle school where gloss filled roller balls were LIFE and it was man-da-tory to have one or two on hand at all times. You could always find me with a red cherry and a clear gloss tucked away in my backpack or back pocket. I can still remember their smell. A weird fake buttery kind of scent–even for the cherry flavored.
Things have changed since then…a lot. And these days, when athleisure is my outfit of choice and brows are the only thing I won’t leave the house without–creative entrepreneurship and motherhood–I’m much more likely to be that girl who’s pulling a gloss out her bag instead of a liquid lipstick. Though don’t get it twisted, there is DEFINITELY a liquid lipstick on deck as well. Here are my picks for lip gloss for grown women whose lips are still poppin.
NUDE LIP GLOSS FOR BLACK GIRLS
While clear gloss is universal, with Black girl beauty brands taking over, we now have nude lip gloss that match brown skin effortlessly. And if we’re talking about nude gloss for brown skin, of course I have to start with Mented Cosmetics. Send Nudes is a deep tan gloss that would stun on any Black girl’s skin. If you prefer your nude gloss a bit warmer, Pat McGrath’s Flesh is warm mid-tone brown that has me in. love.
GLOSS IN COLOR
On the opposite end of the spectrum is gloss with a ton of color. I’m talking bright pinks and iridescent purples. I love Prom Night by Coloured Raine. Such a fun and vibrant color. Definitely something to pair with a little black dress for a pop of color. I also have my eye on Blac Minerals Seychelles. Not only is the color everything, but the ingredients are natural-based which is always a win in my book.
THE EVERYDAY GLOSSES
Finally, there are the glosses that remind me why I fell in love with lip gloss in the first place. The sparkle, the shine, the subtle pigment that makes for a major impact. I can’t talk about gloss like this and not mention Fenty Fu$$Y, a universal soft pink that everyone should own. There’s also Beauty Bakerie’s Drive Me Glazy. A glittery bronze with a perfect name. And Trophy Wife by The Lip Bar for an everyday gloss you can dress up or down. A trophy for real.
