Black girls need sunscreen too. As a beauty writer, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve written that sentence! Whether I’m focused on Black women, our Black babies, or Black men, the reality is no matter how magical we are, black skin needs sun protection too. And I get it, sunscreen has gotten a bad rap with us. Either we’ve heard we don’t need it or we’ve tried the white, pasty sunscreens that left us looking ashy. But it’s a new day. Not only are there sunscreens for Black women that work for our beautiful black and brown skin, but that are made by us as well. Summer is here friends. It’s time to add these SPF products to your cart and protect your skin. ~ xo

BLACK GIRL SUNSCREEN
The creation of Black beauty entrepreneur Shontay Lundy, Black Girl Sunscreen is a sun protection brand made for Black women. With a short, but sweet product line, her premiere Black Girl Sunscreen and BGS Kids SPF 50 products are made with natural ingredients and double as both sun protection and moisturizer.
The original Black Girl Sunscreen lotion is a daily sunscreen with SPF 30 that dries completely clear. No white residue left behind. It’s also full of natural ingredients that work to moisturize and nourish your skin while protecting it including vitamin-rich jojoba which is loved for its hydrating benefits and moisturizing avocado.
The only sunscreen dedicated to kids on this list, this Black mama was super excited when I heard about this product debut! The BGS Kids sunscreen with SPF 50 is a daily lotion that follows the same natural ingredients and moisturizing benefits as the original in a water-resistant formula. That means the babies can play in the pool and at the beach for up to 80 minutes with sun protection.
Unsun was the very first sunscreen brand I discovered created by a Black woman, Katonya Breaux. I was so excited to learn there was a business dedicated to protecting black skin! I especially love the dedication to clean sunscreens for Black women because as you know, natural-based will always have my heart.
This Mineral Tinted Sunscreen is the brand’s most popular product and for good reason! Think of it as tinted moisturizer meets sunscreen. It’s mineral-based which means it’s active ingredients (the ingredients that provide sun protection) are natural minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. As for the sunscreen itself, it’s a primer and color corrector, and it tinted so it blends in with your skin without the white cast.
Where the tinted sunscreen is a facial sunscreen, this Everyday Body Lotion is dedicated to the rest of your body. It’s another mineral-based sunscreen and is also water-resistant up to 80 minutes as well. It does have a slightly lower SPF which means you’ll need to reapply more often so be sure to toss this in your bag if you’re headed to the beach or will be spending the day in the sun.
EleVen by Venus Williams
The newest sunscreen on our list, the Eleven by Venus Williams brand debuted two new products in partnership with clean beauty retailer Credo. You’ll see why I’m so excited about this particular line below, but honestly, I was sold at “suncare without limits” and also…it’s Venus Williams!
With my new-ish obsession with skincare (gotta make sure the Black remains uncracked) when I saw that this was a sun serum, I knew I had to learn more. Sure enough, Unrivaled Sun Serum is a silky sunscreen serum that hydrates the skin and dries down to a velvety finish. It’s mineral-based and uses zinc oxide along with other naturally-derived ingredients to make this a clean option for your skin.
If you have oily or oily/combination skin like me, you know that a chalky finish isn’t the only thing we’re nervous about when it comes to sunscreens for Black women. The greasy finish sunscreens leave behind, especially during the steamy summer months, is not a good look. On-the-Defense is a sheer facial sunscreen that dries down to a semi-matte finish. Semi-matte sunscreen is all I needed to know. Here for it!
