For a girl with skin that loves to act funny from time to time, summer is the one season where I feel like it’s on its best behavior. With my skin falling somewhere between combination with a few dry spots and straight oily, even during my good skin months, I have to treat her well. So this weekend, after my social distance Juneteenth celebrations of course, I’ll be switching up my routine and products for summer. I don’t know about you, but I like to keep my summer skincare routine light, easy, and of course, Black-owned. If you feel me, here’s a Black-owned summer skincare guide with just the products you need.
Shop The Guide
A common misconception about summer skincare is that you don’t necessarily have to worry about moisture and hydration as much. Let me be the one to tell you that while you can save your heavy cream cleansers for the colder months, you still want to be sure your summer cleanser is giving your skin the moisture it needs. The Gentle Matter daily facial cleanser by Klur is exactly what I mean. Light, gel-based, and refreshing. It’s formulated with gentle ingredients like anti-aging dandelion and moisturizing olive which is a combination I wouldn’t have considered, but LOVE. I also love that Gentle Matter can work on any skin type, even sensitive.
When shopping for summer skincare, you want to look for products that are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals and other environmental pollutants that can stress your skin out. This face toner by Chloe+Chad is made with hibiscus which is known for its rich antioxidant content along with its ability to combat premature aging. I love that the rest of the Hibiscus Face Toner’s ingredients are just as natural so if you’re looking for something clean for your summer routine this is definitely one to consider!
Remember, summer is all about keeping it light and the same goes for your moisturizer. You want something that’s going to absorb quick, dry fast, and leave your skin feeling light and refreshed. This aloe-vera moisturizer from Base Butter meets all those standards and then some. Another natural-based skin care product, the Radiate Face Jelly is made with healing aloe vera and evening primrose which is full of omega fatty acids that work to hydrate the skin, soothe inflammation, and promote elasticity in the skin. It’s also a gel-based moisturizer which should work well across skin types.
While this summer is shaping up to look a whole lot different than what we’re used to, the one truth we can all look forward to –or not– is how our skin will react to the warmer weather. Between sweat, maybe a beach day or two (we ain’t judging sis), or a pool date, the need to exfoliate during the summer is real. I’ve always gravitated toward grains or exfoliators that I can mix with my cleanser which is why the Skin Soil exfoliating powder by Klur is the perfect addition to this list. These grains are a mix of powders like brown rice and rosehip and work as traditional exfoliators do to buff away dead skin cells and prep your skin for treatments and serums.
VITAMIN C SERUM
As a Black woman who’s been living in this skin for 30+ years, I’m no stranger to hyperpigmentation and dark marks. The cost of being blessed with all this melanin! A good brightening serum can help to minimize them though and help even my complexion. When choosing a serum I look for vitamin C because it is THE ingredient for brightening the skin. Not to mention it’s also an antioxidant. I definitely wanted to put this vitamin C serum by Hyper Skin in my summer skincare rotation. Another gel-based product, because we want to keep it light even as we’re layering products, the Hyper Clear Brightening Clearing Serum with Vitamin C is 15% vitamin C, E, and a combination of brightening botanical enzymes.
The last essential summer skincare product for me has to be a daily face mist. Something to give me a quick little refresh, but that’s also light enough to spritz over my makeup on the go if need be. Which is why it’s important that it only has a few simple ingredients as well. This rose water face mist by Rosen Skincare is exactly what I’m looking for. Hydrating enough to be used in place of my daily moisturizer in a pinch and made with simple ingredients like rose water (which you already know I love) and castor oil.
And finally, I would say it goes without saying, but I’m gonna say it anyway: don’t forget your sunscreen! Need some options? You know where to find them (click the link above).
